What are the Modal Verbs
Modal verbs in English Grammar are a special class of verbs in English that are used to express various shades of meaning related to obligation, permission, ability, possibility, certainty, and probability.
موڈل فعل انگریزی میں فعل کا ایک خاص طبقہ ہے جو فرض، اجازت، قابلیت، امکان، یقین اور امکان سے متعلق معنی کے مختلف رنگوں کو ظاہر کرنے کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔
Modal verbs are used to modify the meaning of other verbs and to indicate the speaker’s attitude or stance towards the action or event being described.
In this article, we will discuss the different types of modal verbs and their functions in English grammar.

Types of Modal Verbs
There are ten modal verbs list below:
Ten Modal verbs in English, Which are:
- Can/Could – used to express ability, permission, or possibility (قابلیت، اجازت، یا امکان کے اظہار کے لیے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔)
- May/Might – used to express permission, possibility, or probability (مئی/مائٹ – اجازت، امکان، یا امکان کے اظہار کے لیے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔)
- Shall/Should – used to express obligation, advice, or suggestion ( ذمہ داری، مشورہ، یا تجویز کے اظہار کے لیے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔)
- Will/Would – used to express willingness, intention, or prediction (رضامندی، ارادہ، یا پیشن گوئی کے اظہار کے لیے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔)
- Must – used to express obligation or necessity (فرض یا ضرورت کے اظہار کے لیے استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔)
Functions of Modal Verbs:
- Ability قابلیت: Modal verbs are used to express the ability to do something. For example, “Adam can swim” means that Adam have the ability to swim.
- Possibility امکان: Modal verbs are used to express the possibility of something happening. For example, “It may rain tonight” means that there is a possibility of rain tonight.
- Permission اجازت: Modal verbs are used to express permission to do something. For example, “You can borrow my car” means that you have permission to borrow my car.
- Obligation فرض: Modal verbs are used to express obligation or necessity. For example, “I must finish this project by tomorrow” means that I am obligated to finish the project by tomorrow.
- Advice مشورہ: Modal verbs are used to give advice or make suggestions. For example, “You should study for the exam” means that it is advisable to study for the exam.
- Intention نیت: Modal verbs are used to express intention or willingness to do something. For example, “I will help you move” means that I am willing to help you move.
- Prediction پیشن گوئی: Modal verbs are used to express prediction or future events. For example, “It will rain tomorrow” means that it is predicted to rain tomorrow.
Examples of Modal Verbs in Use:
- Can/Could:
• “I can speak French fluently.” (میں روانی سے فرانسیسی بول سکتا ہوں۔)
• “Could you lend me some money?” (کیا آپ مجھے کچھ پیسے ادھار دے سکتے ہیں؟) - May/Might:
• “You may call his brother if you need to.” (اگر آپ کو ضرورت ہو تو آپ اس کے بھائی کو فون کر سکتے ہیں۔)
• “It might snow later this evening.” (آج شام کے بعد برف باری ہو سکتی ہے۔) - Shall/Should:
• “You should read a book daily.” (آپ کو روزانہ ایک کتاب پڑھنی چاہیے۔)
• “Shall we go to the movies tonight?” (کیا ہم آج رات فلم دیکھنے جائیں گے؟) - Will/Would:
• “I will come to your office.” (میں آپ کے دفتر آؤں گا۔)
• “Would you like something to drink?” (آپ کچھ پینا پسند کریں گے؟) - Must:
• “Asim must read this outline before the exams.” (عاصم کو امتحانات سے پہلے یہ خاکہ ضرور پڑھنا چاہیے۔)
• “They must follow the rules of the park when visiting.” (انہیں پارک کا دورہ کرتے وقت قوانین پر عمل کرنا چاہیے۔)
Modal Verbs in Questions and Negatives:
Modal verbs are used in questions and negatives to express different meanings.
For example:
- • “Can you come to the party tonight?” (کیا آپ آج رات پارٹی میں آ سکتے ہیں؟) (question about ability).
- • “Imran can’t come to the your birthday party tonight.” (عمران آج رات آپ کی سالگرہ کی تقریب میں نہیں آ سکتا۔) (negative about ability).
- • “May I borrow your pen?” (کیا میں آپ کا قلم ادھار لے سکتا ہوں؟) (question about permission).
- • “You may not go for dinner late night” (آپ رات کے کھانے کے لیے نہیں جا سکتے) (negative about permission).
- • “Should I apply for the job?” (کیا مجھے نوکری کے لیے اپلائی کرنا چاہیے؟) (question about advice).
- • “You shouldn’t go for late night parties.” (آپ کو رات گئے پارٹیوں میں نہیں جانا چاہئے۔) (negative about advice).
- • “Will you be at the meeting tomorrow?” (کیا آپ کل میٹنگ میں ہوں گے؟) (question about future events).
- • “I wouldn’t (would not) go out in that weather if I were you.” (اگر میں آپ ہوتے تو میں اس موسم میں باہر نہیں جاتا۔) (negative about prediction).
